‘No one is better off under Tinubu’s govt’ — SDP’s Adebayo

Adebayo Critiques Tinubu Administration’s Economic Policies
Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during the 2023 election, has expressed strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the economic situation for many Nigerians has worsened since the government took office in May 2023.
Adebayo shared his views in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he highlighted what he described as the administration’s failure to tackle pressing issues such as economic hardship and insecurity.
“The fact of the matter is that no one’s life is better off except those who are in government,” Adebayo stated. He pointed out that the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians are evident in various economic indicators, asserting, “I know that my life is not better off, and those of my neighbors are not better off.”
He emphasized that the country’s deteriorating economic conditions impact citizens across different social strata, urging that governance discussions prioritize the well-being of Nigerians over partisan interests.
This criticism aligns with earlier statements Adebayo made in 2025, where he condemned the Tinubu administration’s fiscal policies, suggesting they impose undue financial burdens on the populace. He previously described the president as a leader primarily concerned with tax revenue generation.
“President Tinubu is a clever tax collector. He wants to collect taxes from you for everything, including the oxygen tax, very soon,” Adebayo remarked during a prior interview on the same platform.
He further denounced import duty policies implemented under Tinubu, labeling them as detrimental to the public and inconsistent with the president’s historical stance as a pro-democracy advocate.
“It is an anti-people decision,” he said, reflecting on Tinubu’s shift from his earlier political alignment with the SDP to a focus on financial interests. Adebayo warned that if current trends continue, the administration could introduce taxes on various aspects of daily life, including a hypothetical “multiple childbirth tax.”
These remarks highlight Adebayo’s ongoing critique of the government’s economic strategies and raise questions about the administration’s impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.
