Ogun LG boss clamps down on illegal dump site in Sagamu

Local Government Officials Address Illegal Dumping in Sagamu

SAGAMU, Nigeria — The Executive Chairman of the Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Odulate, has announced firm measures to prevent the town from becoming a dumping ground for waste from other states.

Odulate made the statement on Monday during an inspection of an unauthorized dumpsite in the Sotubo area of the local government. Reports from residents alerted him about trucks, reportedly belonging to the Lagos Waste Management Authority, dumping waste at the location.

“The presence of these trucks has raised significant concerns about environmental degradation and safety risks for both residents and commuters,” Odulate said.

He emphasized his administration’s commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of the community, asserting that activities posing risks to public safety would not be tolerated. Odulate described the illegal dumping as a serious violation of environmental regulations, clarifying that no individual or organization has the authority to establish a waste disposal site without proper government authorization.

“Our swift intervention was necessary to verify the reports, assess the situation, and ensure that the health, safety, and environmental well-being of our people are not compromised,” he stated.

Community members, including Folorunso Awosanya and Falilat Adekunle, expressed their relief and appreciation for the timely response from local authorities. They reported that the illegal dumping had generated offensive odors and raised health concerns among residents and schoolchildren.

Local officials are taking steps to address the situation and prevent future violations.
