Outrage in Benue as soldiers allegedly assault youth volunteers

Residents Outraged Following Alleged Assault by Soldiers in Benue
Residents of the Apa Local Government Area in Benue State have expressed strong dissatisfaction following reports that soldiers allegedly assaulted and disarmed youth volunteers who were mobilizing to enhance community security. This incident reportedly took place in the Adija community, just days after the reported killings of three farmers in Ikobi, an area that has faced ongoing security challenges.
Local sources indicate that youth volunteers from various villages gathered in Ologo and Asaba to discuss pressing security issues and explore protective measures for their communities. These volunteers were reportedly intercepted by soldiers as they returned home.
During the encounter, Olowo Otache, a local vigilante commander, and his younger brother were allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries. Residents reported that both men were subsequently taken to General Hospital in Ugbokpo for medical treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread anger among residents, resulting in protests and a temporary blockade of the Otukpo–Oweto Federal Highway by youths demanding enhanced security and better protection for vulnerable communities.
A youth volunteer, Adu Aboh, noted the growing concern among local youths regarding the increasing frequency of attacks and killings in the area. He stated that many residents feel their communities remain exposed to security threats despite repeated pleas for intervention.
Aboh also claimed that soldiers confiscated locally made firearms from some volunteers during the encounter. Another resident, Energy Onoja, mentioned that local volunteers have previously collaborated with security agencies, including the police, to bolster community safety. He expressed worry that the recent incident could undermine these initiatives.
Concerns over rising insecurity along the Apa–Agatu corridor were also raised, as several communities have reported attacks, displacement, and destruction of livelihoods. Ofu Adu, a resident in Ochumekwu community, alleged that security agencies were often informed of impending attacks, but responses frequently came too late, after significant damage occurred.
The recent developments have intensified calls for stronger security measures in vulnerable communities throughout the Apa Local Government Area. Community leaders are urging the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Benue State Government to enhance protective efforts, investigate the allegations, and restore public trust in security operations.
As of this report, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
