JIGAWA, Nigeria — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep sorrow over the recent canoe accident in Jigawa State that resulted in the deaths of at least 40 women and children.
In a statement shared on social media Monday, Obi characterized the incident, which occurred in the Malamawa community of the Ringim Local Government Area, as a significant tragedy for both Jigawa State and the entire nation. He noted that the victims, primarily women and children, represented vital pillars of their families and the future of the country.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic news emerging from the Malamawa community, where at least 40 women and children are feared dead following this devastating canoe mishap,” Obi stated. “My heart goes out to the grieving families enduring this unimaginable pain. I pray that the Almighty grants them the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
The former governor of Anambra State also called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take decisive action to address the underlying systemic issues contributing to such transport disasters. He emphasized the need for urgent measures to prevent future tragedies.
“As we mourn, we must also confront the systemic failures that lead to these recurring disasters,” Obi added.
