Edo State Police Arrest 119 Suspects in Recent Crime Sweep
The Edo State Police Command has reported the arrest of 119 individuals for various criminal offenses between March and April 2026. The announcement was made by Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika during a press conference in Benin City on Tuesday, where he also launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
Agbonika outlined that the suspects were detained in connection with a range of crimes, including kidnappings, sexual and gender-based violence, cultism, armed robbery, murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and rape.
In addition to the arrests, police operations during this period resulted in the rescue of 58 kidnapping victims. The breakdown of arrests includes 55 individuals for kidnapping, 15 for cult-related activities, eight for armed robbery, and 15 for murder. Additionally, 23 individuals were apprehended on charges of rape and defilement.
The police recovered a selection of firearms, including two AK-47 rifles, six pump-action guns, seven locally-made guns, and 13 cartridges.
Agbonika emphasized that these outcomes reflect a strategic approach to policing, enhanced collaboration with other security agencies, and community partnerships aimed at improving safety in Edo State. He noted the importance of adaptive policing techniques in countering evolving criminal methods, stating that criminal organizations now operate in structured cells.
He highlighted the introduction of advanced technologies such as drone surveillance, high-tech tracking systems, and intelligence-driven strategies as significant advancements in the fight against violent crime, particularly in the Edo Central and Edo North senatorial districts.
Agbonika acknowledged the support of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, as well as the cooperation of community leaders, the media, and residents. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties in the state.
