Police arrest three suspected motorcycle thieves in Sokoto

Three Arrested in Motorcycle Theft Operation in Sokoto State

SOKOTO, Nigeria — Three individuals were arrested by the Sokoto State Police Command on suspicion of involvement in motorcycle theft and trafficking in stolen property.

The arrests were coordinated by the Command’s Strike Force Unit on May 23, 2026, at approximately 10 a.m., following a tip-off from a resident.

According to a statement from police spokesman DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, operatives acted on credible intelligence, which directed them to several locations, including Kano Road, Runjin Sambo, Gidan Dare, and Gidan Man Ada.

One suspect has been identified as Yahuza Abubakar, a resident of Darna Village in the Wamakko Local Government Area. Rufa’i reported that during questioning, Abubakar confessed to stealing a red Kasea motorcycle and subsequently selling it to an accomplice.

The investigation led to the arrest of Alhaji Samaila Aliyu from Gidan Igwai, who is accused of receiving the stolen motorcycle. Police recovered an ash-colored Haojue motorcycle from Aliyu and discovered that the red Kasea motorcycle had been sold to Ahmed Abdullahi of the Gawon Nama area. Abdullahi was also taken into custody, and the motorcycle was retrieved from him.

In total, the police recovered two motorcycles—a red Kasea and an ash-colored Haojue—and two master keys believed to have been used in the thefts.

Rufa’i noted that inquiries are ongoing to ascertain whether the suspects have ties to other motorcycle theft rings operating in the region. All suspects are currently in police custody and will be formally charged after the investigation concludes.
