Plateau State Police Urges Compliance with Drone Regulations
The Plateau State Police Command has issued a warning to residents, individuals, and businesses about the operation of drones without the necessary approvals. The advisory, released Sunday by Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo, emphasizes that unauthorized drone use could lead to arrests, confiscation of equipment, and legal consequences.
The statement explains that the warning aims to enhance security, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure proper regulation of drone operations throughout Plateau State. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is identified as the sole body authorized to issue permits and approvals for drone use in Nigeria.
According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, particularly Part 17 concerning Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), operators must secure the necessary approvals and implement an approved security program before conducting flights. Compliance requires operators to submit detailed plans that include flight locations, schedules, and safety measures.
The police also cautioned that using drones for criminal activities, such as transporting unauthorized cargo, weapons, or explosives, is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, operators are warned against actions that could result in harm to others or damage to property, as well as any practices that may threaten public safety.
Drone operators are expected to maintain their devices within visual range, adhere to approved flight altitudes, and avoid restricted or no-fly areas. The police also highlighted that using drones to invade personal privacy could be deemed harassment or trespassing, leading to a breach of peace.
In collaboration with other security agencies, the police intend to enforce these regulations, apprehend violators, and prosecute illegal drone use cases. They also encouraged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious drone activity to local police or the Control Room.
