Police debunk bandit invasion rumours in Lagos, arrest 15

Lagos Police Dismiss Rumors of Bandit Attacks, Report Death Linked to Misinformation

The Lagos State Police Command has refuted recent social media allegations regarding armed banditry in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo, and other areas, labeling these claims as false and designed to incite fear among residents.

In a statement released on Monday by spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police emphasized that there was no ongoing security threat or coordinated attacks on schools or communities in Lagos State.

“The Lagos State Police Command categorically states that the claims contained in the circulating posts are misleading and unfounded, intended to create unnecessary fear, panic, and apprehension among residents,” the statement read.

The police reassured the public that schools in the state remain secure and that security agencies are actively maintaining surveillance and a visible presence in local communities.

“There is currently no security crisis, invasion, or coordinated attack on any school or community in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo, or any other part of Lagos State,” the statement continued.

Despite this reassessment, the police reported that the dissemination of false information led to the death of a 24-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Kulaha Ayuba. Community members, reacting to unverified reports of a bandit invasion, mistakenly identified Ayuba as a Fulani bandit and assaulted him.

“Regrettably, the spread of this false alarm has resulted in a tragic and avoidable loss of life,” the statement noted. The police added that Ayuba’s motorcycle was reportedly stolen, and his body was later found in a local swamp.

Following prompt action from security personnel, authorities arrested 15 suspects in connection with the incident, who are now being questioned as investigations continue.

“Fifteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently under investigation. The Command assures the public that those found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the police stated.

The Command condemned the dissemination of unverified information that could lead to public disorder, ethnic profiling, and mob violence, warning residents against sharing unconfirmed reports on social media.

“The deliberate dissemination of unverified information capable of causing chaos, inciting public disorder, and promoting ethnic profiling will not be tolerated,” the statement asserted.

Furthermore, the police cautioned that individuals responsible for originating or deliberately circulating false and inflammatory information might be prosecuted under the law.

Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani urged Lagos residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior through official security channels instead of relying on unverified social media reports.

“The Command remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property and assures all Lagosians that adequate security measures have been put in place to sustain the peace currently enjoyed in the state,” the statement concluded.
