ABUJA — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for support from Northern youths for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, emphasizing the importance of continuing the administration’s economic reforms and policies.
Akpabio made his remarks on Saturday while receiving a delegation from the Northern Ethnic Groups Assembly. He stated that the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration—such as the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange adjustments—while challenging, are essential for revitalizing Nigeria’s economy.
“These policies have reached a crucial point and are beginning to show tangible benefits for our citizens,” Akpabio said, addressing the youth leaders present.
He positioned himself not just as a politician but as a dedicated public servant committed to the prosperity of Nigeria, particularly the Northern region. “The reforms initiated by President Tinubu are not abstract theories; they are concrete actions aimed at eliminating long-standing structural obstacles and tapping into Nigeria’s immense potential,” Akpabio added.
The Senate President noted that the elimination of the fuel subsidy and stabilization efforts in the foreign exchange market are critical for achieving financial sustainability. While he acknowledged that these measures brought initial hardships, he asserted they were necessary to reallocate government resources to vital sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
“While these measures initially posed challenges, they were the surgical procedures needed to redirect resources,” Akpabio said, highlighting early signs of success including improved revenue collection, heightened investor confidence, and renewed interest from international partners.
He urged Northern youths to engage actively in governance, stressing that they are “architects of today, not just leaders of tomorrow.” The Senate President also pointed out that the 10th National Assembly prioritizes reforms that enhance transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
“Your innovation and engagement are essential to these reforms,” Akpabio noted, encouraging critical consumption of information and the importance of constructive dialogue.
His comments come as political activities ramp up ahead of the 2027 general elections, with his appeal underscoring the significance of policy continuity in advocating for another term for Tinubu. Akpabio warned that abandoning the current reform agenda prematurely could jeopardize the progress made thus far.
In response, Alhaji Ibrahim Dan-Musa, spokesperson for the Northern Ethnic Groups Assembly, commended Akpabio’s efforts to foster political understanding between the North and South. “We commend the Senate President for his accessibility and dedication to the Nigerian project,” Dan-Musa said, asserting that Akpabio has worked to rebuild trust across ethnic and regional lines.
The coalition pledged to mobilize at the grassroots level to educate citizens on the long-term benefits of the federal government’s economic policies, emphasizing that national unity must take precedence over regional interests.
“National unity is the ultimate anchor of our collective survival,” Dan-Musa stated. “No regional sentiment can take precedence over the sovereignty and peace of Nigeria.”
The assembly identified three key areas for political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections: continuous consultation with Northern youth organizations, grassroots education on federal fiscal policies, and a steadfast commitment to national cohesion. The coalition expressed a commitment to transparent communication between federal leadership and Northern youth groups, along with awareness campaigns aimed at clarifying government economic policies to rural communities.
