Six ISWAP Suspects Killed in Explosive Mishap in Borno State

MART, Borno State — Six suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were killed following the premature detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were reportedly assembling on Saturday morning.

The explosion occurred around 7:00 a.m. in the village of Jubilaram, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who cited security sources in a post on X. Makama indicated that the militants were engaged in the assembly of an explosive device when the incident took place.

Among the deceased was a suspected bomb expert identified as Abu Umar, who was leading the group of fighters at the time of the explosion. In addition to the six fatalities, three other members of the group sustained serious injuries.

Security sources revealed that the group was part of an ISWAP bomb-making cell operating within the Marte–Kerenoa–Wulgo axis, a known hotspot in the Lake Chad region. The explosion destroyed their location and took place while the device was in the assembly phase, leading to a sudden detonation.

Intelligence reports suggest that the blast may have also impacted another ISWAP manufacturing site located between Arinna Maimasallaci and Arinna Ciki.

Authorities stated that this incident could potentially diminish ISWAP’s capacity to conduct roadside bomb attacks in the region. In light of this development, security officials are reportedly considering additional operations to target remaining insurgent elements within the area.
