Tinubu appoints new Special Adviser on Power

President Appoints Rilwan Babalola as Special Adviser on Power
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Rilwan Lanre Babalola as the Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration. The announcement was made Thursday in a press release from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Babalola, a former Minister of Power, is recognized for his extensive expertise in the energy sector and his understanding of the challenges within the electricity value chain.
In a related restructuring, the presidency has also renamed the Office of the Special Adviser on Energy to Special Adviser on Oil and Gas. This change aims to clarify responsibilities and prevent overlap within the energy governance framework.
The new task force will operate under a direct presidential mandate focused on restoring discipline, efficiency, and commercial viability in the power sector. The statement outlined that the task force will coordinate activities among key government ministries, departments, and agencies.
Additionally, the task force is tasked with implementing a comprehensive reset of the electricity sector and a “Performance Before Expansion” strategy. This includes efforts to reduce technical and commercial losses, enhance revenue assurance, and promote the productive use of power across key sectors.
President Tinubu expects Babalola to bring a sense of urgency and strong execution focus to the role, aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming for tangible improvements in power supply and overall sector performance.
