Uganda confirms three new Ebola cases

Uganda Reports Three New Cases of Ebola Virus, Total Rises to Five

Uganda’s Ministry of Health confirmed three additional cases of Ebola virus on Saturday, bringing the total number of infections in the current outbreak to five since the disease was first detected in the country on May 15.

The new cases include a Ugandan driver, a health worker, and a woman from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is currently grappling with a major outbreak of the virus.

In a statement shared on X, the ministry emphasized that health authorities are intensifying response measures to prevent further spread of the virus. “The ministry continues to strengthen surveillance, case management, contact tracing, and public awareness efforts to contain the outbreak and protect the health and safety of all Ugandans,” the statement said.

This announcement follows the World Health Organization’s recent decision to elevate the risk level of the outbreak in the DRC to its highest classification due to rising concerns throughout the region.

Earlier this week, the Ugandan government suspended public transport links with the DRC following the initial reports of two Ebola cases, one of which involved a fatality among Congolese nationals who had crossed the border.

Health officials indicated that ongoing containment efforts are focused on contact monitoring, enhancing surveillance systems, and reinforcing public awareness campaigns aimed at limiting further transmission in affected areas.
