2027: Peter Obi told me he’s more popular than Atiku - Dele Momodu

Peter Obi Declines Alliance with Atiku Ahead of 2027 Election, Says Dele Momodu

Media entrepreneur Chief Dele Momodu disclosed in a recent interview that Peter Obi has chosen not to pursue a political alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the 2027 presidential election approaches. Momodu stated that Obi believes he has greater popularity than Atiku.

During his appearance on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, Momodu recounted his discussions with Obi about the potential for collaboration with Atiku. He advised the former governor of Anambra State to consider the benefits of joining forces with Atiku, emphasizing the historical successes of political leaders who transitioned from vice president to president.

“I told Peter, ‘Why don’t you go and work with Atiku? He was the one who brought you to national prominence,’” Momodu said. He noted that Atiku’s selection of Obi as his running mate during the 2019 presidential election faced initial resistance within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“When Atiku picked Peter, the governors were angry,” Momodu recalled. “But once Atiku makes up his mind, he’s a very focused man.”

Momodu presented several examples to Obi of politicians who had successfully ascended to higher offices after serving as vice presidents. He cited Ghana’s former President John Mahama, suggesting that Mahama’s vice presidency under Prof. Atta Mills was key to his subsequent electoral success.

“I explained that if Mahama was not a VP to Prof. Atta Mills, he might never have become president,” Momodu said, drawing parallels with former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and U.S. President Joe Biden.

Despite Momodu’s arguments, Obi remained unconvinced. “You’ve always been a governor of a state,” Momodu recounted Obi telling him, “but he believes he’s more popular than Atiku.”

Momodu is the publisher of Ovation International.
