Anglican Church suspends popular Anambra priest over ‘arrangee prophecy ‘

Church of Nigeria Suspends Priest Over Allegations of Staged Prophecies

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese on the Niger, has suspended the Rev. Ifunanya Maduka from his position as Vicar of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Nteje, Anambra State. The suspension, effective for six months without pay, is based on allegations of engaging in staged prophecies, also referred to as “arranged” prophecies.

In a letter dated April 27, 2026, Bishop Owen Nwokolo announced the suspension, which has circulated widely online. The Diocese stated the decision followed “credible and verifiable reports” that Maduka allegedly orchestrated prophetic acts by involving individuals he reportedly induced or compensated, presenting these actions as genuine manifestations.

The Bishop’s letter indicated that Maduka admitted to the allegations when confronted with the evidence. The Church expressed “deep sadness and grave concern” regarding his involvement in practices deemed inappropriate for an ordained minister, citing issues of false prophecy and deception of worshippers.

“The actions may amount to obtaining money under false pretenses,” the statement noted, emphasizing that Maduka’s conduct violates Christian doctrine, Anglican discipline, and ethical standards expected of clergy, ultimately bringing disrepute to the Church.

As part of his suspension, Maduka is required to transfer all church property and responsibilities to the People’s Warden and vacate the church premises within four days. A disciplinary panel will be established within a month to further investigate the matter and determine any additional sanctions in accordance with church regulations.
