EFCC Chair Issues Apology Following Uyo Hospital Incident

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has instructed that an apology be issued to Professor Eyo Ekpe and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in response to a May 12, 2026, incident involving EFCC personnel and staff at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH).

The directive was announced in a statement posted on the EFCC’s social media account on Monday. The decision followed a review of a preliminary report concerning the incident between the agency’s operatives and medical personnel at the hospital.

In the statement, Olukoyede emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to the wellbeing of Nigerians and expressed regret over the disruption caused to hospital staff and the public.

The agency also affirmed its intent to launch a thorough investigation into the incident. It pledged that any officer found to have breached professional conduct standards would face internal disciplinary action.

Furthermore, Olukoyede reiterated the EFCC’s focus on addressing the issues stemming from the incident and preventing similar occurrences in the future. He assured that the situation would not impede the commission’s overarching mandate.

He urged NMA members and other professional organizations to continue collaborating with the EFCC in the fight against economic and financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria.
