AAC picks Sowore as consensus presidential candidate for 2027

AAC Names Sowore as Consensus Presidential Candidate for 2027

The African Action Congress (AAC) has selected Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and the publisher of Sahara Reporters, as its consensus presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 general election.

The decision was made during the party’s presidential primary, where Sowore received unanimous support from party members.

Kayode Babayemi, Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, announced Sowore’s selection, highlighting the party’s trust in his dedication to democracy, justice, and good governance.

“I declare Omoyele Sowore as the consensus presidential candidate of the African Action Congress,” Babayemi stated, adding that the decision reflects the party’s confidence in Sowore’s consistent leadership and commitment to the pursuit of justice and freedom in Nigeria.

Babayemi also expressed gratitude to the party members and supporters for their commitment to AAC’s ideals. “I sincerely appreciate every party member, stakeholder, and supporter who came out today in solidarity with the vision and values of our great party,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Sowore characterized the AAC as “the only genuine opposition party in Nigeria,” asserting the party’s resolve to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative. He remarked on the party’s resilience against political pressures and its independence from corrupt influences.

“While some claimed there was no alternative to dictatorship, we declared RevolutionNow in 2019,” he emphasized. Sowore also rejected suggestions of a coalition with established political parties, asserting that the AAC itself represents an essential coalition for revolutionary change.

“We are here not only to secure victory but to bring revolutionary change,” he stated. “One of the biggest questions asked of us is whether we are forming a coalition. We told them: we are the coalition. You are the coalition, and we are the coalition.”

Sowore distinguished the AAC from other political platforms, noting its foundation on hard work and the collaborative efforts of ordinary Nigerians. He stated, “We don’t have a structure of criminality. We don’t have a structure of incompetence. We don’t have a structure of kidnapping or insecurity.”

The AAC’s presidential candidate criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress for contributing to various challenges faced by the country. He also urged international financial institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund, to refrain from extending loans to Nigerian politicians, warning that his future administration would not repay such loans if he wins in 2027.
