Analyst Questions Potential Gains from Lebanon-Israel Talks
Imad Harb, a senior fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC, expressed skepticism regarding the ongoing discussions between Lebanon and Israel, stating that it is difficult to envision any beneficial outcomes for Lebanon.
In remarks made during an interview with host Steve Clemons, Harb criticized the United States for not effectively curtailing Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, despite having facilitated a ceasefire on paper. He suggested that Israel is using Hezbollah as a pretext for expanding its territory in Lebanon, noting parallels to its military strategies in Gaza, the West Bank, and Syria.
Harb cautioned that pressures on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah could lead to civil conflict within Lebanon, particularly if Israel is permitted to occupy significant areas of Lebanese land.
