President Tinubu Renames Kaduna Institute to Honor General Yar’Adua

Kaduna, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu officially announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology during his 2026 Democracy Day address on Friday.

In his speech, Tinubu paid tribute to the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, recognizing his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development. “Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honor General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” he stated.

The president emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, saying, “Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.”

Tinubu called on Nigerians to unite and work towards a cohesive future, rejecting division and cynicism while embracing hope and confidence.

General Yar’Adua served as Chief of Staff at the Supreme Headquarters under former military leader Olusegun Obasanjo from 1976 to 1979. He played a crucial role in Nigeria’s transition from military rule to civilian governance. Following his military career, he founded the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), which became a significant force in Nigerian politics.

Yar’Adua later opposed the military government of Sani Abacha and faced arrest on treason-related charges, ultimately dying in prison in 1997.
