Niger: Death toll in Rafi communal crisis rises to 18
Death Toll Rises to 18 in Niger State Land Dispute Violence
Rafi, Niger State — The ongoing communal crisis in the Rafi Local Government Area has led to the death toll rising from 10 to 18, following a series of violent incidents linked to a protracted land dispute between the Fulani and Kamuku communities.
According to State Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun, the violence stems from a longstanding conflict between the two groups. He reported that on June 29, armed assailants invaded Godoro village in Katako District, fatally shooting 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The killing prompted a reprisal by members of the local vigilante group known as Yansakai, who subsequently blocked a road and killed 28-year-old Bashir Mazi.
Further reports indicate that on July 1, at around 10 p.m., 15 individuals were burned to death inside a two-bedroom apartment in Angwan-Baago, near Godoro village. Additionally, another person was killed at a different location, bringing the total fatalities in the conflict to 18.
Abiodun confirmed that the attacks appear to be a direct result of the land dispute between the affected communities. In an effort to restore order, a reconciliation committee comprising officials from the Rafi Local Government Council, community leaders, and security agencies is currently at work.
Moreover, police and military patrols in the area have been intensified to prevent further violence and protect residents and property. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing.
