Court convicts 52 for contravening Abia environmental laws, discharges nine
52 Convicted During Environmental Clean-Up in Abia State
UMUAHIA, Abia State – The Abia State Environmental Mobile Court convened on Saturday to address violations of environmental regulations, resulting in the conviction and fine of 52 individuals out of 64 apprehended during the state’s monthly clean-up exercise.
Authorities arrested the offenders between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. in various locations across Umuahia for loitering and trading in prohibited areas. The cases were heard at the Mobile Court, located within the Umuahia High Court complex, where the individuals were charged with violating the Abia State Basic Environmental Laws.
Presiding Magistrate O.C. Ibekwe adjudicated the cases, ultimately convicting 52 individuals and imposing fines payable to the state government. Additionally, nine individuals were released after it was determined they were ill, students in preparation for exams, or engaged in essential duties.
Three other offenders received community service orders as a corrective measure for their actions.
Following the proceedings, Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, urged residents to support initiatives aimed at maintaining a clean environment. Ogbonna, represented by Ikechukwu Oriuwa, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, announced plans for a Neighbourhood Environmental Watch to promote cleaner practices in local communities. He emphasized that this initiative is designed to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and mitigate harmful environmental practices.
