Ogun State Police Foil Cult Initiation, Arrest 17 Suspects
The Ogun State Police Command foiled a cult initiation event in the Ibogun Shomi area of Ifo Local Government on Friday, leading to the arrest of 17 individuals.
According to police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the operation was conducted following credible intelligence received about the planned gathering. A combined team of anti-robbery, surveillance, and patrol officers raided the location and apprehended the suspects, recovering a locally fabricated shotgun and an axe.
The arrested individuals are aged between 18 and 30 and include Daniel Chigozie, Oyewole Basit, Samuel Olusegun, and several others. Babaseyi noted that the operation took place around 2:40 a.m. on July 31, 2026.
“The suspects and exhibits will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and necessary action,” Babaseyi stated.
In a separate incident, police in the Owode Division, in collaboration with local vigilantes, arrested Abubakar Umaru on Friday in connection with the theft of a Bajaj motorcycle. Preliminary investigations indicate that Umaru and an accomplice, now at large, used a master key to steal the motorcycle parked in front of the Central Mosque in Ajilete Yewa. The motorcycle has since been recovered.
Additionally, on July 23, police acting on an anonymous tip-off apprehended Ibrahim Aliyu at Goshen Estate, Obantoko. He was allegedly caught vandalizing and stealing installed equipment, including one industrial air conditioning unit and two dismantled generator sets. Investigations are ongoing to determine his involvement in related burglary and vandalism activities.
