Woman allegedly steals newborn after deceiving husband over pregnancy in Kebbi

Kebbi State police have arrested a 19-year-old woman, Khadija Ibrahim, in connection with the alleged theft of a newborn baby in Zuru Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman announced the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday. Ibrahim is accused of taking the baby shortly after the infant’s mother, Fatima Muhammad, gave birth on July 23, 2025.
According to the police, Ibrahim, a resident of Rikoto, offered to assist Muhammad by fetching hot water after she delivered. Instead, she allegedly fled with the newborn.
Investigators indicated that Ibrahim had reportedly faced pressure regarding her childless status, particularly as many of her peers had already become mothers. She is alleged to have misled her husband for nine months into believing that she was pregnant. Following Muhammad’s delivery, Ibrahim is accused of presenting the stolen baby to her husband as their own.
After a thorough investigation, Ibrahim was apprehended on August 14, 2026, and the baby was successfully recovered and returned to the biological mother.
The police confirmed that Ibrahim remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of their inquiries.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, commended the officers involved in the case for their dedication and professionalism, particularly in ensuring the safe return of the child.
