Subsidy: Tinubu gave Nigerians bad news from day one – Dele Momodu

Chieftain Critiques Tinubu’s Administration Over Fuel Subsidy Removal

Dele Momodu, a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized President Bola Tinubu for delivering unfavorable news to Nigerians from the outset of his administration, particularly regarding the removal of the fuel subsidy.

In an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, Momodu raised concerns about the ongoing borrowing practices under Tinubu’s leadership despite the subsidy removal. He described the circumstances surrounding the fuel subsidy as unclear and lacking transparency.

“The subsidy removal is shrouded in mystery,” said Momodu, who is also the publisher of Ovation Magazine. He expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of accessible data related to the fuel subsidy, complicating the discourse on the policy’s implications.

Momodu further suggested that the current political environment in Nigeria resembles a dictatorship, wherein citizens cannot hold elected officials accountable.

President Tinubu announced the elimination of the fuel subsidy shortly after taking office on May 29, 2023. Momodu remarked, “Nobody gives bad news on a celebration day. That’s what Tinubu did. He gave bad news to Nigerians from day one, and Nigeria has not recovered since then.”

He questioned the administration’s borrowing practices, asking, “Why are you still borrowing more than all the other presidents?” Momodu highlighted the difficulties faced by citizens in seeking answers from their government representatives, asserting that a culture of unaccountability has emerged within the national leadership.
