EPL: ‘It showed today’ – Owen Hargreaves pinpoints major issue with Man United after Hull City defeat

Manchester United Faces Criticism After Loss to Hull City

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has identified a significant issue within the team following their 2-0 defeat to Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Hargreaves called for the club to acquire a new forward before the summer transfer window closes on September 1. He argued that despite dominating possession with 72 percent, Manchester United struggled to create meaningful scoring chances.

Hull City capitalized on set pieces, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy each scoring to secure the victory. Matheus Cunha started as the striker for Manchester United, while Benjamin Sesko, recently recovered from a shin injury, remained on the bench. Neither player significantly impacted the match against Hull City’s organized defense.

In an interview with TNT Sports, Hargreaves stated, “I believe they could benefit from an additional striker option. This was evident today, as Sesko did not start and Cunha operated a bit deeper. He is more suited as a number 10 and performs effectively from the left side.”

Hargreaves noted that with the addition of Carlos Baleba, the team possesses the capability to contend for a top-four finish. However, he reflected on the effectiveness of United’s counter-attacking strategy during the previous season. “Recall Carrick’s initial matches against City and Arsenal; they excelled in those counter-attacks. Today, despite having possession, they appeared unlikely to score.”

He also highlighted the need for adjustments, stating, “I think it will become easier when space opens up, which was not the case today. They need to reassess and consider what adjustments they can make.”

Reports indicate that Manchester United has completed the signing of Carlos Baleba for the midfield position. The club is also exploring potential acquisitions, including Alejandro Balde and Jorge Salinas.
