Man drowns while fleeing suspected cultists in Lagos

A man identified only as Opeyemi drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, after reportedly jumping in to escape suspected cultists.
According to a police source, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, when Opeyemi was allegedly attacked while walking to purchase an item. The source indicated that a group of men began pursuing him, prompting him to seek refuge in the river.
A resident of the area reported that Opeyemi was being chased by individuals believed to be associated with cult activities. The resident added that attempts to rescue him were thwarted by his pursuers.
Opeyemi was subsequently confirmed to have drowned in the river.
An anti-cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra, offered an alternative account of the events in a Sunday post. The organization cited contrasting narratives from witnesses, with some claiming Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance when he entered the river. Others maintained that he was chased and attacked before jumping in. According to the post, those who claimed to witness the incident stated he was en route to purchase drugs when he was confronted and assaulted.
Descriptions of Opeyemi from acquaintances highlighted him as a nice, hardworking individual.
As of the time of this report, the exact circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear, with conflicting accounts not yet independently verified.
When reached for comment on Sunday, Abimbola Adebisi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, indicated that she would provide further information but had not responded by the time of publication.
