Akwa Ibom court grants bail to Princess Udoito after 270 days in custody
The Akwa Ibom State High Court has granted bail to Princess Godsown Udoito after she spent 270 days at the Uyo Correctional Facility. Udoito faced allegations of making defamatory remarks against Governor Umo Eno.
Previously, both the State High Court and the Court of Appeal in Calabar denied Udoito bail, citing the serious nature of the charges, concerns about her potential flight risk, and possible threats to public order.
Udoito’s extended detention sparked significant unrest and calls for intervention from various organizations, including the Ekid People’s Union (EPU), women’s groups, and His Eminence Nteyin Solomon Etuk, the Oku Ibom Ibibio. These groups appealed to the governor for clemency and facilitated her release.
Following Udoito’s bail approval, the EPU released a statement on Wednesday, titled “Our Princess Is Free!” expressing gratitude to Governor Eno for his involvement in her release. The statement was signed by President General Dr. Samuel Udonsak and Secretary General Hon. (Barr.) Bassey Dan-Abia. They also acknowledged the support of Nteyin Etuk, alongside the paramount rulers of Eket and Esit Eket, and other community leaders who advocated for a peaceful resolution.
The EPU noted that Udoito is currently receiving post-release care. The union’s statement emphasized their appreciation for the governor’s compassion, stating that what initially appeared to be a contentious situation had concluded amicably.
In conclusion, the EPU announced that the matter is now resolved and urged the residents of Akwa Ibom to focus on collective development efforts.
