Presidential Candidate Calls for Arrest of NSCDC Personnel Following Miners’ Deaths
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) linked to the deaths of over 30 miners in Niger State.
Sowore made his demands in a statement shared on his verified X account on Friday. Reports indicate that approximately 37 suspected illegal miners died while in NSCDC custody, sparking widespread protests from local youths who took to the streets in response to the incident.
In light of the unrest, the Niger State Government announced a 24-hour curfew on Friday to restore order.
Sowore condemned the actions of the NSCDC, stating, “At this point, the NSCDC officers involved should have been arrested and subjected to a thorough criminal investigation over the deaths of these innocent miners. Where the evidence establishes deliberate or premeditated killings, those responsible must be charged for murder accordingly. There must be no cover-up and no impunity for the unlawful taking of innocent lives.”
