Forged certificates by politicians could spark violence in Nigeria – Peter Obi warns

Peter Obi Warns of Potential Violence in Nigeria Over Forged Certificates

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a stark warning regarding the implications of allowing politicians with fraudulent qualifications to participate in elections. Speaking on Sunday, Obi stated that this practice undermines public trust in leadership and sets a troubling precedent for Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Allowing politicians with fake qualifications to run for office sends the wrong message to Nigerians and weakens trust in leadership,” he remarked. Obi emphasized the necessity of credibility and integrity for anyone seeking public office, suggesting that failure to uphold these standards could lead to an escalation of violence within Nigeria’s democracy.

His comments followed a recent incident in which the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Bakassi, Cross River State, was attacked by suspected political thugs, causing significant property damage and disrupting an event. Obi characterized this violent act as “an assault on democracy itself.”

He expressed concern that such incidents, alongside the issue of certificate forgery, indicate a deterioration of democratic values in the country. If these trends are not addressed, Obi warned, they could heighten tensions in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

The former governor of Anambra State urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability and thorough vetting of candidates, asserting that the integrity of future elections hinges on the election of qualified and credible leaders.
