Atiku didn’t do much to secure ADC presidential primary — Babachir Lawal

Former SGF Criticizes Atiku’s Campaign Efforts for ADC Presidency
Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has expressed concerns regarding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s campaign strategies leading up to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary. Lawal asserts that Atiku took minimal action to secure the party’s nomination in preparation for the upcoming 2027 election.
During a Monday interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lawal discussed his recent resignation from the ADC, citing dissatisfaction with the primary election process that ultimately resulted in Atiku being named the party’s candidate.
Lawal noted that he and fellow party members anticipated a competitive primary, highlighting the vigorous campaigning of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. “Amaechi was confident that if we went to primaries, he would win. His supporters were equally confident in his chances,” Lawal remarked. He pointed out Amaechi’s active efforts to secure the nomination, which he contrasted with Atiku’s relatively subdued approach.
“In the lead-up to the primary, we often questioned what Atiku was doing to win, as he was not actively campaigning or engaging with the electorate,” Lawal said.
Having resigned from the ADC, Lawal has been vocal about what he describes as irregularities in the primary election. He accused Atiku of manipulating the process to his advantage and maintaining that the results did not accurately reflect the preferences of party members.
