CSO raises alarm over worsening economic hardship across Nigeria

Civil Society Group Raises Alarm Over Economic Hardship in Nigeria
The Osun Masterminds (TOM), a civil society organization, has expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating economic difficulties faced by citizens across Nigeria. The group highlighted these issues during the April State of the State address delivered by Executive Director Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli on Tuesday.
Prof. Oyedokun-Alli noted that many Nigerians are struggling to meet basic survival needs. He stated, “The current situation in the country does not need any introduction. Survival has become an extreme sport for most Nigerians.”
Despite government assertions of macroeconomic improvements, the group pointed out that everyday citizens are grappling with rising food prices, skyrocketing fuel costs, and persistent insecurity, which adversely affects agricultural production.
TOM called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to mitigate these hardships. Recommendations include reducing fuel prices and addressing the security challenges disrupting food supply chains. Additionally, the organization urged the Osun State Government to implement proactive measures aimed at improving the living conditions of residents through people-oriented policies.
“States must move away from being just procurement offices to becoming real problem solvers that develop policies with direct impact on the people,” the group emphasized.
In light of the upcoming 2026 governorship election, TOM stressed the importance of peaceful campaigning and mutual respect among political actors. The organization condemned recent incidents involving supporters of the Accord and the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticizing any acts that suppress political expression. “The action of suppression of another party supporter’s free political will is unacceptable and may spiral into a breakdown of law and order,” the group warned.
Additionally, TOM applauded the recent summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, noting the importance of dialogue among these groups. However, they cautioned against rhetoric that could incite violence or undermine democratic institutions. The organization underscored the necessity of safeguarding the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission and urged the Federal Government to ensure adequate support for credible elections.
