I am not desperate to be president – Peter Obi

Peter Obi: My Focus is on Nigeria’s Future, Not the Presidency

Nairobi—In a recent interview on the Nevon HQ podcast, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, articulated that his political aspirations are driven by a desire for national improvement rather than personal ambition for the presidency.

Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, emphasized his commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing Nigeria. “I am not desperate to be the president of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he stated.

He noted the significant economic hardship affecting many Nigerians, particularly the youth, who struggle to secure sustainable livelihoods. “I am desperate to see young people have a means of livelihood. I am desperate to see people stop stealing public money. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he added.

Obi also expressed concern about the increasing trend of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad. “Today, all over the world, Nigerians are running to Niger, Ghana, and everywhere because there are no opportunities in this country, despite the fact that God blessed Nigeria with everything,” he said.

Outlining his vision for the nation, Obi highlighted national unity as the cornerstone of any transformation agenda under his potential leadership. He asserted, “I will start transformation by uniting this country, bringing it together to be a country everybody will be proud of.”

Economic inclusion and poverty reduction are also key components of his proposed agenda. “I will ensure social inclusion and reduce the level of poverty,” he stated.

According to Obi, Nigeria’s challenges are surmountable with the right approach and strategic investments, particularly in the education sector. “To do this, we will invest in critical areas of development such as education. These things are not rocket science. Countries across the world have done this,” he remarked.

He concluded by asserting that, with effective leadership and resource management, Nigeria can unlock its potential and create opportunities for its citizens.
