Ijebu Ode gas leakage: Police call for calm, say situation is under control

Gas Leak Affects Students, Teachers in Ijebu-Ode

Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State — The Ogun State Police Command has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring public safety following a gas leak incident on Friday along the Agoro/Okunowa Road, which impacted over 100 students and teachers from several schools.

The affected institutions include Our Ladies Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Titilayo Agbaje Comprehensive High School, Ifesowapo Comprehensive High School, St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, St. Anthony Grammar School, and Orphanage Primary School.

This incident comes just over a month after a similar occurrence involving a chemical odor at Our Lady of Apostles Primary and Secondary Schools, where 30 students and two teachers required hospitalization.

State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni said in a statement released by Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babaseyi that the situation has been stabilized. He confirmed the prompt dispatch of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other tactical teams to manage the area and support emergency response efforts.

“The situation has since been brought under control, while monitoring and technical assessments continue,” Ojajuni stated. Authorities received reports of the chemical emission while on patrol in the area, prompting a swift response.

Victims were transported to the General Hospital and various private medical facilities, with Ojajuni noting that no lives were lost and all affected individuals are responding to treatment. Initial air quality assessments indicated elevated levels of methane gas in the vicinity. Environmental experts and emergency response teams are currently investigating the source of the emission and evaluating potential risks.

Kehinde Bello, General Manager of the State Environmental Protection Agency, characterized the incident as a security issue rather than a widespread safety concern. He refuted claims linking the gas leak to larger air pollution, emphasizing that its impact was confined to specific schools.

Bello visited several sites, including St. Anthony Grammar School and local hospitals, to assess the situation. He urged community members and guardians to remain calm, assuring them that the government is actively working to resolve the issue.
