NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake Augmentin 625mg Tablets

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding counterfeit Augmentin 625mg tablets being sold in Nigeria. The agency cautioned that these fake antibiotics could lead to serious health risks, including treatment failures and the development of antimicrobial resistance.

NAFDAC identified the counterfeit product, packaged as Augmentin 625mg Tablets (two packs of seven), with Batch No. AC3N, following complaints from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the manufacturer of the legitimate medication.

In a statement via its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, NAFDAC reported that investigations confirmed inconsistencies in the manufacturing and expiry dates on the suspect batch. These discrepancies did not align with GSK’s production records, suggesting that the product had been falsified.

“GSK evaluated and confirmed that the suspected product was counterfeit after reviewing documentary evidence, photographs, and videos from social media. Although it bore the same batch number as the authentic stock previously supplied to Nigeria, it showed irregularities in manufacturing and expiry dates,” NAFDAC said.

The investigation found that Batch AC3N was manufactured in Worthing, United Kingdom, on August 23, 2023, and packed between September 19 and 20, 2023. However, no batch with the number AC3N was produced in September 2025. The counterfeit product displayed manufacturing dates of September 2025 and expiry dates of September 2028, which do not match GSK’s production records. Additional quality concerns included packaging errors and substandard sealing.

Augmentin, a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections. Counterfeit versions may contain incorrect amounts of active ingredients, no active ingredients at all, or harmful substances.

NAFDAC has urged all stakeholders—including importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers—to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing or using the counterfeit tablets.

The agency emphasized that all medical products should be sourced from authorized suppliers and that consumers should verify the authenticity and condition of any medical product before use. Those who have purchased or are using Augmentin 625mg Tablets suspected to be counterfeit are advised to cease usage immediately and consult a qualified healthcare professional.
