Nigeria Becomes 34th African Country To Ratify African Medicines Agency Treaty

Nigeria has officially ratified the African Medicines Agency (AMA) Treaty, becoming the 34th member state of the African Union (AU) to do so. This decision aims to improve the regulation of medicines and enhance access to safe and quality-assured medical products across the continent.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) confirmed the ratification in a post on its official X account. The agency noted that this step is vital for harmonizing medicine regulation throughout African nations and for strengthening collective efforts against substandard and falsified medical products.

In its announcement, NAFDAC emphasized that Nigeria’s commitment to this treaty underscores the country’s dedication to promoting public health, advancing pharmaceutical development, and fostering local drug manufacturing.

The African Medicines Agency is intended to enhance regulatory systems on the continent, facilitating improved coordination and harmonized standards among national medicines regulatory authorities. Nigeria’s ratification is expected to bolster broader African initiatives aimed at ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines and medical products, while simultaneously supporting the growth of the continent’s pharmaceutical industry.
