Ohanaeze, SEDC join forces to drive South-East economic growth

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, South-East Development Commission Collaborate for Economic Growth
ENUGU, Nigeria – The Council of Igbo Business Leaders, in partnership with the South-East Development Commission, has initiated efforts aimed at fostering economic development and integration within the South-East region of Nigeria.
During a meeting held on Monday in Enugu, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the Council of Igbo Business Leaders, emphasized the urgency for key stakeholders in the region to unite in addressing youth unemployment and other social challenges. He urged members of the Igbo community to prioritize investments in the South-East, highlighting the region’s long history of economic and social neglect due to various historical, political, and economic factors.
Ohuabunwa outlined the Council’s mission, which includes identifying and mentoring young Igbo entrepreneurs, creating a unified voice for the business community, and developing markets in the region. He called for collaboration with the South-East Development Commission and other stakeholders to effectively address these goals.
“This is the opportunity we long wished for,” Ohuabunwa said, expressing gratitude to Mr. Mark Okoye for facilitating the meeting. He acknowledged the commitment of colleagues who attended despite short notice and scheduling conflicts.
In outlining the Council’s initial tasks, Ohuabunwa noted the importance of working alongside regional governments and development agencies to enhance economic conditions in Igbo land. He pointed out the adverse effects of neglect on the region, including rising youth unemployment and related social issues.
“Our people have made significant contributions across Nigeria, but this has led to a neglect of our own region,” he said. “It is our intent to guide those wishing to invest at home while aligning closely with government policies to prevent misinformation.”
Mark Okoye, Managing Director of the South-East Development Commission, expressed appreciation for the Council’s leadership and emphasized the need for cooperative efforts to advance the region. He highlighted the importance of mobilizing investments, fostering diaspora and domestic networks, establishing venture capital programs, and supporting small and medium enterprises.
Through these initiatives, both organizations hope to drive economic development and improve conditions for residents in the South-East.
