Osun election: Police arrest officer over tear gas incident
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer following an incident involving the accidental discharge of tear gas at the Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Modakeke Ward 10 during Saturday’s governorship election.
Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when residents confronted police officers, alleging that the use of tear gas was intended to disrupt the voting process.
In a statement released via X on Saturday, the police clarified that the incident did not occur at a polling unit and was not an effort to intimidate voters. According to the statement, the tear gas was released as a result of the officer’s negligence while attempting to ease himself.
“The Command wishes to clarify that the incident did not take place at any polling unit. It occurred at the Registration Area Centre (RAC) and was the result of negligence on the part of an officer who was attempting to ease himself,” the statement read.
The police also condemned the officer’s actions, confirming that he has been arrested and an investigation is underway. “This conduct is highly condemnable and falls far below the standard expected of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force,” the command stated.
The police further rejected claims that the tear gas was intentionally released to alarm voters and interfere with the election process. Officials reminded the public that officers stationed at polling units are prohibited from carrying firearms or tactical equipment in designated voting areas.
