Two arrested for allegedly impersonating soldiers years after leaving military school
NIGER STATE, Nigeria — The Niger State Police Command has arrested two men who allegedly impersonated military personnel and assaulted a laundry attendant in Suleja over a purportedly missing mobile phone.
According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspects, identified as Abraham Ashiwel and Michael Okonkwo from the Bakassi area of Suleja, were apprehended following an incident at a laundry shop in the Angwan-Gwari area on August 8.
Abiodun reported that the men assaulted the shop attendant in connection with an alleged theft before the police from ‘B’ Division in Suleja launched an investigation leading to their arrest.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to posing as military personnel in the community for several years.
Further investigation revealed that both individuals had previously attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria, although they were expelled in 2016 and 2019, respectively.
Authorities recovered several items from the suspects, including a military camouflage trouser, two combat T-shirts, two pairs of desert boots, two identity cards, and two jackknives.
The suspects are currently in custody as police continue their investigation and are expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further proceedings.
