World Cup 2026: Why I mocked Japan’s Kento Shiogai after 2-1 win – Brazil star, Cunha
Brazil’s Matheus Cunha Responds to Japan’s Kento Shiogai Ahead of World Cup Matchup
Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has addressed remarks made by Japan’s Kento Shiogai, who questioned the current strength of the Brazilian national football team. Following Shiogai’s comments, Cunha responded with a gesture signifying “five stars,” referencing Brazil’s five World Cup victories.
Brazil’s national team, known as the Selecao, has a storied history, claiming the World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. The team has produced numerous football legends, including Pelé, Neymar, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, and Romário. However, Brazil has faced challenges in recent international competitions, failing to progress past the quarter-finals in four of the last five tournaments, including the 2006, 2010, 2018, and 2022 World Cups. The only exception was in 2014, when they reached the semi-finals but suffered a staggering 7-1 defeat to Germany.
Prior to the Round of 32 match against Brazil, Shiogai expressed skepticism about the team’s current capabilities, stating, “Brazil used to be a powerhouse, but what about now?” He added that he believes only France and Argentina currently hold formidable status in international football. Shiogai has made one appearance for the Samurai Blue during the group stage.
During the match, which Brazil won 2-1, Cunha played for 66 minutes. After the game, he discussed Shiogai’s comments, emphasizing the importance of respect for the Brazilian jersey. “I have nothing against Japan; they are a great team, but he made some remarks about Brazil that we cannot accept,” Cunha stated.
With key players like Cunha, Vinícius Júnior, Bruno Guimarães, and Marquinhos, Brazil aims to secure a sixth star on their jersey at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
