Breaking: Kano Governor Yusuf Set to Rejoin APC, Date Announced

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf plans to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on January 26, 2026. His decision is motivated by a desire to enhance cooperation with the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor initially joined the APC in 2014, running for a senatorial seat but later conceding to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a statement, Governor Yusuf highlighted that the current political and governance landscape called for a united approach to national development, which he believes the APC embodies. He described the APC as a familiar and structured platform for fostering progressive governance. The decision to rejoin the APC is also seen as a step towards achieving political stability and unity within Kano State. On the day of his formal re-registration, Governor Yusuf will also initiate the APC’s e-registration exercise, coinciding with the re-registration of several local government and assembly members.
Public reactions to the governor’s impending return to the APC have been varied, with some supporters expressing optimism for the party’s success in upcoming elections. Notable comments included support for his leadership and hopes for a victorious outcome in 2027 elections. The APC anticipates strengthening its ranks with Yusuf’s return, as they have set aside registration number 001 for him.
This strategic shift has been framed as part of broader political realignments within Kano, especially as Nigeria approaches the next general elections. Governor Yusuf’s defection reportedly includes the support of 73 officials from various political positions in the state, indicating significant backing for his move and underscoring the evolving political dynamics in the region.
The NPC’s Kano State Secretary, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, expressed enthusiasm for Yusuf’s transition and indicated plans for strategic discussions aimed at fostering unity among both incoming and existing party members ahead of upcoming elections. This suggests a concerted effort to ensure a cohesive political front within the APC as they prepare for future contests against rival parties.
Overall, the governor’s return to the APC is emblematic of the shifting political landscape in Nigeria, as parties realign ahead of the significant electoral challenges ahead.
