Kano: This is ‘total betrayal’

Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar-Mata, the former Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation in Kano State, recently became the first political appointee to resign from Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration following the governor’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Kofar-Mata’s resignation ignited a series of similar resignations from other loyalists of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the political figure who initially guided Abba to power. Kofar-Mata views the governor’s defection as a profound betrayal, echoing a sentiment of outrage among NNPP supporters, who feel that Abba has abandoned the principles and trust inherent in the Kwankwassiya Movement.

Kofar-Mata asserts that the governor’s claim that his defection was for the betterment of Kano State—citing issues like security—holds no merit. He argues that joining the APC, a party embroiled in various security crises in its states, is irrational and driven by personal interests, not the welfare of the people. He insists that citizens voted for NNPP out of trust in its leadership and ideology, not because of Abba’s personal appeal.

In discussing the reactions to the governor’s claim of isolation as an opposition party, Kofar-Mata refutes this assertion, highlighting that Kano has previously thrived politically despite being in opposition. He recalls the successes during previous opposition tenures, indicating that the problem lies not in opposition itself but in Abba’s failure to uphold party principles and commitments to the people.

Reflecting on his political alignment with Kwankwaso, Kofar-Mata expresses deep disappointment as Abba now aligns with factions that once opposed him. He recalls how individuals left the Kwankwassiya Movement due to dissatisfaction with Abba’s nomination for governorship in 2019, labeling the current events as a massive betrayal. Kofar-Mata emphasizes that his resignation was an act to uphold the party’s integrity, and insists the NNPP represents the people’s true mandate.

Looking to the future, Kofar-Mata is optimistic about the potential for reclaiming power. He believes the electorate remains loyal to Kwankwaso and his ideology and foresees a resurgence in the 2027 elections. He argues that the power belongs to the people and that they would turn out to reclaim their mandate, as they did in previous elections.

Kofar-Mata challenges the idea of an internal crisis within NNPP, asserting that the discord was sown by Abba himself, who deviated from the party’s founding ethos. He underscores the importance of unity among party members and the need to galvanize support to regain influence.

Addressing questions about the Deputy Governor’s subdued presence, Kofar-Mata states that the Deputy remains aligned with the NNPP and continues to fulfill his responsibilities. He emphasizes that any resignation should not occur as both leaders share a jointly held mandate.

In summary, Kofar-Mata’s insights reflect the frustrations of many within the NNPP against Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection, highlighting a commitment to the party’s ideology and a determination to reclaim political power in future elections.
