Nigeria’s First Lady Launches Kidney Disease Clinic and Food Bank Initiative in Jigawa State

Hadejia, Jigawa State — Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, inaugurated a kidney disease clinic and a health technology academy, while also launching the National Community Food Bank Programme, during a recent event in Hadejia. These initiatives are part of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery, food security, and the welfare of vulnerable populations across the country.

The Oluremi Tinubu Clinic and Dialysis Centre, constructed and equipped through a partnership between FutureMap Foundation and eHealth Africa, focuses on the early detection, treatment, and prevention of chronic kidney disease, which has emerged as a significant public health issue in Nigeria.

At the commissioning ceremony, Tinubu highlighted the clinic’s role in providing essential healthcare access to underserved communities. “This clinic is a life-saving intervention,” she stated, emphasizing its importance in addressing the country’s health challenges.

She also inaugurated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Academy, established by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). This academy aims to equip young Nigerians and healthcare professionals with skills in technology, data analytics, and innovation to tackle health issues more effectively. According to NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa, the academy represents a key advance in Nigeria’s integration of technology into healthcare delivery and research.

In addition to these health initiatives, Senator Tinubu launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the North-West Zone, aimed at improving access to nutritious food for children under six years, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi noted that the programme reflects a collective commitment from North-West governors to combat food insecurity and malnutrition through community-focused strategies. He reported that over 382,000 children were screened for malnutrition in 2025, up from about 245,000 in 2024.

Governor Namadi assured Tinubu that North-West states would enhance the initiative by providing necessary resources, such as storage facilities and distribution centers, to ensure that vulnerable households benefit from the food bank programme.

Calling the initiative a sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition, Senator Tinubu highlighted its alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda focused on food security, healthcare, and social protection.

She praised the Jigawa State Government for its investments in infrastructure and human development, particularly the key projects unveiled during her visit.

The launch of the health facilities and food bank programme underscores the ongoing collaboration among federal, state, and development partners to strengthen healthcare services, improve nutrition, and foster resilient communities throughout Nigeria.
