‘No excuses’ – Bago orders full immunization coverage across Niger

Niger State Governor Urges Strong Support for Immunization

NIGER STATE, Nigeria — Governor Umaru Bago emphasized the critical importance of immunization, calling it a fundamental responsibility for all residents. He urged the community to view vaccination as an urgent duty necessary for protecting children and safeguarding public health against preventable diseases.

Bago made his remarks through Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, Commissioner for Health, during the kickoff of the 2026 World and African Immunization Week at the Primary Health Care Centre on Peter Sarki Road in Tunga. He characterized the occasion as a significant call to action rather than a mere ceremonial event.

“Behind every vaccination is a life protected and a future secured,” Bago said, reflecting this year’s theme, “For Every Generation, Vaccines Work.”

The governor highlighted the global success of vaccines, noting their role in saving millions of lives, eradicating smallpox, and bringing polio close to extinction. He emphasized that these achievements represent real stories of survival for children and families, contributing to healthier communities.

Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the immunization initiative, stating that all 25 local government areas are fully mobilized for the campaign. He reassured residents that vaccines are free, safe, and effective, urging parents and caregivers to ensure no child misses routine immunization.

In his address, Dr. Mustapha Jibril, Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government and former Commissioner for Health, called on community leaders to combat misinformation and foster acceptance at the grassroots level. He noted that achieving the state’s goal of vaccinating over 80 percent of children would require coordinated efforts from the Ministry of Health and its development partners, particularly in reaching underserved areas.

Jibril dismissed common myths surrounding vaccines and pledged that all local government chairmen would support the state’s health agenda to ensure every eligible child receives immunization.

Grace Odeyemi, UNICEF’s Social and Behaviour Change Team Lead, reiterated the efficacy of vaccines in preventing childhood diseases. She confirmed the organization’s commitment to assisting Niger State in identifying and reaching children who have not yet been vaccinated.

Community members also shared their experiences highlighting the importance of immunization. Expectant mother Aisha Isa encouraged women to prioritize vaccinations, citing the consistent guidance she has received during her antenatal care. Nursing mother Katumi Aliyu described her regular clinic visits, expressing how continual medical support has strengthened her confidence in the healthcare system.
