AAU lecturer dies in Edo hotel after alleged encounter with sex worker

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, was found dead in a hotel room on October 5, 2026, following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
Authorities reported that Uwuigbe checked into a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob. He is believed to have died shortly after their encounter. Sources indicate that Uwuigbe asked Jacob to leave the room briefly to purchase items for them. Upon her return, she discovered him unresponsive on the bed.
The incident was reported to the police around 8 p.m. the same day. Eno Ikoedem, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the details, noting that three individuals—including the hotel owner, the manager, and Jacob—have been arrested as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death.
“The command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe had engaged the services of a sex worker and was found dead upon her return to the room,” Ikoedem stated. She also confirmed that Uwuigbe’s remains have been taken to the mortuary at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital.
In a statement, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, the university’s Public Relations Officer, acknowledged Uwuigbe’s affiliation with the institution but emphasized that the incident took place outside the university premises. “We are not denying that he is our staff, but what transpired is a matter of his private life. The individual involved is not a student of our institution, and the events occurred beyond our grounds,” he said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
